JAEGER LECOULTRE POWERMATIC 10K Gold Filled Vintage Automatic Watch 1950

Jaeger LeCoultre "Powermatic" automatic “bumper” vintage gents 10 carat gold filled watch with a power reserve indicator on the dial, manufactured in 1950. This watch presents very well on the wrist and having just been oiled and adjusted, runs strongly and keeps time. The power indicator on the dial shows 40 hours running time when the power unit is fully charged and it runs down into the red when the watch is unwound. A bumper movement is an early automatic movement which has a rotor to wind the watch which moves back and forth, hitting stops rather than turning continuously through 360 degrees. When you shake the watch you can hear and feel the bumper mechanism operating but this seldom happens when the watch is worn. It is signed in three places, on the dial, case and movement.

Dial: signed “LeCoultre Automatic Swiss” with a black enamel finish and an inner minutes chapter. The power reserve indicator is located just under the 12 o'clockposition. The hours are marked by gold coloured Arabic numerals and batons. The hands are in good shape and the crystal is clean and clear. The dial has been professionally restored in recent years to a high standard.

Case: 10 carat gold filled with stepped lugs, in good condition, measuring approximately 33 mm across, excluding the crown and 40 mm in overall length. The inside of the back cover is signed LeCoultre and hallmarked as 10K gold filled. The case is showing the expected marks from use over the years but nothing of any significance that I could see to point out to you.

Movement: high grade cal. 481, 17 jewel automatic bumper movement is signed “LeCoultre Co Automatic”. Freshly oiled and adjusted, it is running well and keeping time. The bumper unit is an early automatic movement which was first seen in watches in the late 1940's, with many LeCoultre and Omega watches housing them during the early 1950's. Unlike the modern rotors, which sit on top of the mechanism and rotate through 360 degrees, the bumper mechanism rotates through a little over 300 degrees, hits a stop and then bounces back and forth with a hammer action. If you look at the photograph of the movement you will see the springs which cushion the impact of the hammer action and send the rotor back over to the other side of the movement. As with most automatic watch mechanisms (the Futurematic is one exception), the movement can be hand wound. It should be "kick started" when first used by manually winding the watch. When it is fully wound the power indicator will go out of the red and show a 40 hour charge. As older automatics are not quite as efficient as modern day mechanisms, the watch may, need manual winding from time to time depending on how much use and movement it receives when worn in order to keep the power unit charged.

Strap: fitted with a generic black leather strap measuring with the watch fitted, approximately 211 mm from buckle tip to last hole. When I had a good look at the strap, although perfectly serviceable, I wished I had fitted a new one before taking the photos; so you will receive in the package, free of charge, a new good quality black leather strap to fit at your leisure.
