A Rolex 18 carat solid gold Semi Bubbleback Super Oyster Perpetual chronometer grade automatic wristwatch dating to c1953, a rare model in excellent overall condition. The hallmarked case looks great as does the dial. The movement, which was last serviced in 2015, is running strongly and keeping time. The watch is signed four times, on the dial, case, movement and crown. It comes with a Rolex strap and buckle, both signed. This model is rare. Rare because it has what Rolex described a "Phantom Crown", a push pull waterproof crown instead of the screw in crown patented by Rolex some 25 years previously. Rolex had found that not all people remembered to screw in the Oyster crown after setting or winding the watch, resulting in it letting in water. The Super Oyster crown has three gaskets, designed to keep the watch waterproof even when the crown is in the setting position. However with use, the gaskets would lose their waterproofing qualities within a short period of time. As a result Rolex withdrew the Super Oyster after about four years and reverted to their wind in crown, patented in the 1920's and retained to this day. Therefore although a failure, like so many less popular collectibles in their day, the rarity of Super Oyster models with the original crown in very good to excellent condition makes it highly sought after and collectible.
Case: made of 18 carat solid gold , in very good condition indeed having been carefully looked after over the last sixty five years. The case measures approximately 34 mm across excluding the signed crown and 40 mm from lug to lug. The crown bears the Rolex coronet and is signed "Rolex Super Oyster". Looking inside the rear cover, it is hallmarked as 18 carat solid gold with a Swiss Assay and marked "Rolex Geneva Swiss". It is numbered 6084 which is the case reference number. The case shows the inevitable light marks from what can only be careful and infrequent use over the years but absolutely no signs of abuse, dents or scratches of any significance that I could see to point out to you. . Please note that the watch has not been pressure tested, therefore the waterproof qualities of the case are not known or guaranteed.
Dial: in great condition, bearing the the Rolex coronet and signed "Rolex Oyster Perpetual Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified Chronometer". Gold coloured batons mark the hours with the Rolex coronet at 12 o'clock and the hands are in very good shape. The crystal is clean and clear. The dial has been restored to an exceptional standard with the last few years.
Movement: Rolex chronometer grade, automatic movement, serviced in 2015, running perfectly and keeping time.
Strap: used Rolex stitched and lightly padded crocodile grain strap with a gold plated Rolex buckle (showing light tarnishing), which fitted to the watch measures approximately 212 mm from buckle tip to last hole.
