Sorry this watch has been sold
An extremely rare Bulova Accutron Spaceview pedestal watch manufactured in c1964. I have researched the internet and found only one of this model which had a conventional Accutron dial, not the skeletonised Spaceview dial featured on the timepiece I have for sale. I have owned this watch for just over five years. It has sat on my desk during all of that time and it has never missed a beat. Although an avid collector, I am not a hoarder, so I have decided to pass it on to another Accutron collector who would like to own and enjoy this rare timepiece.
This watch is in very good overall condition. It houses the cal. 214 electric tuning fork movement found in Spaceview wristwatches and having recently been serviced, it runs well and keeps very good time. A new battery has just been fitted. They last for about a year or so and as the mechanism has been re-phased, it takes modern battteries which are readily available. The case is made of brass and measures approximately 77 mm high and 45 mm at the widest point. The Accutron crystal is clean and clear and the yellow hands are in very good shape.
The Accutron Tuning Fork electric watch, first developed for sale in 1959, is one of its most iconic and highly sought after models. The Accutron was ahead of its time in both design and technology. The first electric watch had only been released to the retail market a couple of years earlier in 1957 (by Hamilton). With many Accutron variants produced, the futuristic Spaceview model is probably the most collectible of all Accutron watches. However it was introduced to the market by pure accident. Bulova provided their dealers with watches with the dials removed, a bespoke a printed crystal and white hands to display the tuning fork mechanism and the green coloured circuitry inside the watch. These converted watches were purely display products, to show the new innovative technology. To convey a sense of excitement about these new watches, Bulova linked the new technology to the US space programme, hence the name "Spaceview. The advertising worked, but not as intended by Bulova. People loved the Spaceview display model and wanted to buy them. So dealers sold their display models and they flew off the shelves. As a result Bulova added the Spaceview to its range of Accutron models. Today Spaceviews remain the most sought after of all the Accutron range.
