SOLD JAEGER LECOULTRE 14K SOLID GOLD Memovox Wrist Alarm Calendar Watch 1971

A rarely seen 14K solid gold Memovox automatic alarm calendar watch from Jaeger LeCoultre, dating to 1971, in superb overall condition. I have only managed to acquire four solid gold Memovox wrist alarm watches over the last 12 years as they are so rare. This is the first automatic solid gold model I have owned and was delighted to be able to purchase it. The watch has been in my collection for some time as I wanted to enjoy owning it before selling it to make way for new additions. It has an elegant classic case which looks great and an attractive two tone dial with a sweep seconds hand and an alarm arrow marker on the inner section. The automatic movement running strongly and keeping time, with the alarm and calendar functions working perfectly. A new good quality leather strap has been fitted so this watch is ready to wear. It is signed in three places, on the dial, case and movement.

Case: 14 carat solid gold in very good condition. The case measures approximately 35 mm across, excluding the matching crowns and 41 mm in overall length. The inside of the rear cover is signed LeCoultre and hallmarked as 14K solid gold, as is the outside This watch has been carefully looked after over the years and probably only worn occasionally. It is showing the expected light marks from careful use but absolutely no signs of abuse, dents or significant scratches that I could see to point out to you.

Dial: two tone satin silver finish, signed “LeCoultre Memovox Automatic Swiss”. It is also marked "HPG" which signifies "High Precision Guarantee". Applied gold coloured batons mark the hours and the hands are in good shape. The crystal is clean and clear. The dial has been faithfully restored back to as it looked when new.

Movement: high grade 27 jewelled automatic cal. 916 movement, running strongly and keeping time. It is a high beat movement, running at 28000 A/h compared with 18000 A/h for the previous cal.815/825 bumper models. This provides for greater accuracy in timekeeping and is why the dial on this and other models housing the cal. 916 are marked "HPG". The 916 was the first automatic alarm watch produced by any watchmaker with a rotor that would turn a full 360 degrees. Previously they always housed a bumper mechanism due to the alarm hammer mechanism which, when activated hit a pin protruding from the inside of the back case cover. The bumper rotor swung back and forth without hitting the pin whereas a fully rotating rotor would hit the pin. This problem was ingeniously overcome with the 916 by the alarm pin on the case cover passing through a hole in the centre of the rotor. If you look at the photos below you can see the pin on the inside of the cover. The watch is set and can be wound by the lower crown and the alarm is wound and set by the upper crown. The calendar function operates correctly. The serial number on the movement dates the watch to c1971.

Strap: fitted with a new brown leather lizard grain strap which attached to the watch measures approximately 215 mm from buckle tip to last hole.
