Sorry I am sold
A Longines 18 carat solid gold Ultra-Chron gentlemans' vintage automatic calendar watch from 1970 in stunning condition. The Ultra-Chron was introduced by Longines in 1967 to mark the 100th anniversary of the company. It was also a time when supremely accurate quartz watches were threatening the market for mechanical watches. So the Ultra Chron was designed as a high beat mechanism to keep time with great accuracy. It operates at 36,000 beats per hour, twice the speed of most mechanical watches produced at the time. These models are rarely seen and this is the first 18 carat sold gold model that has passed through my hands. The case and dial present beautifully and the automatic movement is running and keeping time with the calendar function operating correctly. Fitted to the watch is a high quality Hirsch Grand Duke leather strap. The watch is signed four times on the case, dial, crown and movement.
Dial: in superb condition with a satin silver starburst finish and signed "Longines Automatic Ultra-Chron". Hours are marked by applied gold coloured batons with black inserts. The hands are in great shape and the crystal is clean and clear.
Case: 18 carat solid gold in great condition, measuring approximately 40 mm from lug to lug and 35 mm across, excluding the signed crown. The case is signed "Longines" on the inside and outside and is hallmarked as 18K solid gold with a Swiss Assay on the inside. the case shows the inevitable signs of light use over the years but no absolutely no signs of abuse, dents or scratches of any significance that I could see.
Movement: crisp and clean Longines signed high grade, high beat cal. 431 automatic movement with 17 jewels. The serial number, dates the watch to c1970. It is running well and keeping time with the calendar function (not quick set) operating correctly. Please also look at the lettering on the rotor. A heavily used watch would have resulted in wear causing the rotor to tilt a little and rub on the inside of the case, causing wear and partial removal of the lettering. The condition of this movement clearly shows that it has received only moderate use over nearly fifty years.
Strap: fitted with a Hirsch Grand Duke brown leather crocodile grain strap which fitted to the watch, the strap measures approximately 225 mm from buckle tip to the last hole.
